What People Say

Oral storytelling is a very old tradition that documents and hands down events from generation to generation. This novella documents the true story of a southern family during the Civil War exemplifying their love for each other and their hardships. Although many stories are lost over time, this story has survived. Storytelling gives us a glimpse into the reality of life during the Civil War.

This is a historical romance, or pretty much “chick lit,” which isn’t my normal reading genre, but I met the author when she spoke at an event and the premise sounded very interesting. It’s a fictionalized account of a true story from the Civil War and is very well written and an enjoyable tale. It’s mostly in the form of letters that Rebecca might have written to describe the situation of her husband’s prisoner of war status and her adventure to get him released and bring him home. Roberta does an excellent job of illustrating the events and emotions of the war and life in general during that period, and the story itself is well-told. For those who enjoy this genre or historical information from this time period, I recommend this book!

This story had me captivated from cover to cover. I felt like I was in the story living it with Rebecca. Roberta did an amazing job at capturing the raw emotions and describing everything in such detail that I could visualize everything happening as I read. It takes a lot for a book to move me to tears, and this one made the list. Thank you so much for sharing this amazing story of love and courage with me and I can't wait to share it with everyone I know!
